Everyone has a favorite summer finger food, but sometimes you just want to get away from the same-old-same-old summer fare. Sure classic mild salsa and spicy fresh guacamole are likely to be on your picnic table this season, but how about trying something a bit different?
Enter hummus dips.
Due to growing popularity of hummus and recipes using hummus, it has earned a spot among some of America’s most loved and classic condiments and finger foods. Whoever thought this simple, tasty and nutritious combination of pureed chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, salt, and spices would become so popular, especially in North America?
While hummus has Mediterranean and Middle Eastern origins and is traditionally served with pita bread or fresh vegetables, it can be used in a variety of other ways. Hummus can be used as a substitute or in addition to some of your favorite condiments such as ketchup, mayonnaise, and even salad dressing. Making chicken or potato salad this summer? Why not try using hummus instead of mayonnaise or add a dollop or two of it to traditional chicken or potato salad for added flavor and creaminess.
Recipes using hummus are becoming widely popular due to its versatility. In fact, hummus dips have grown far beyond their Far East roots and are now combined with other types of foreign cuisine. Hummus is often used to top off tacos or enchiladas, and can even be combined with sushi for a unique yet satisfy savory flavor combination.
However, hummus doesn’t have to be eaten cold. Sure, it’s a great way to top off a nice, cold bowl of summer gazpacho, but did you know you can also cook with hummus too>? Try adding a scoop of your favorite variety of hummus to soup and stews, or use it as part of a summer marinade for grilled meats and vegetables.
