There are different types of walnut trees that grow throughout the world. Many are, of course, native to specific countries and regions. The Mast Tree Network states that the following types of American walnut trees are common in North America:
The black walnut, however, is considered to be the more prevalent species, according to the Mast Tree Network. It is native to a large percentage of the eastern half of North America and Canada.
The American walnut tree is a type of black walnut tree. The Arbor Day Foundation states that it may grow at a rate of 13 to 24 feet a year. By the time these trees gain their maturity, they may reach heights of 50 to 75 feet. Once these trees are 12 to 15 years old, they will begin to bear nuts, and these are usually harvested during the beginning to the middle of fall. While these trees are self-fertilizing, they do require the assistance of wind to be able to pollinate.
The black walnut is a popular nut to eat. People enjoying eating them raw or roasted by themselves or in a variety of dishes. These include baked goods as well as salads and various vegetable dishes.
When planting an American walnut tree, it’s important to do so where they will have a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight every day. The Arbor Day Foundation also indicates that black walnut trees can grow in these and other types of soil:
